The 28-year-old still has a contract with Gladbach until 2026, which means that a transfer fee would be payable if he were to sign in the summer. The Japanese player is being looked at as a replacement for Dier, who is all set for a move to Ligue 1 giants Monaco for free. Itakura is not seeking a contract extension with Die Fohlen given the high demand for his services.

In addition to Bayern, Borussia Dortmund, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Bayer Leverkusen are also reportedly showing interest in Itakura. Since arriving at Borussia Monchengladbach from Manchester City in 2022 for a transfer fee of €5 million — following a loan spell at Schalke 04 — the Japanese international has established himself as a key defensive leader for the club.

Die Roten appear to be aiming for a major shake-up, which could also have a significant impact on the central defence. In addition to Dier, the futures of Kim Min-jae and Dayot Upamecano are also said to be up in the air. According to rumours, contract talks with the latter are dragging on because the Frenchman is asking for too much money. In addition to Itakura, Jonathan Tah from Leverkusen is also said to be back on the agenda.
