After bringing ex-England captain Rooney on board, the Pilgrims were eager to make use of the added attention that he brought to Home Park. The plan was to line up a series that lifted the lid on the Manchester United legend’s return to management.

Rooney was happy to let cameras into his world, having witnessed the success that Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have enjoyed with ‘Welcome to Wrexham’, but said project – which had streaming giants Netflix on board – never really got off the ground.

That is because Rooney was relieved of his duties in Devon after just 25 games. Plymouth are adamant that his appointment was never a PR exercise, with the Pilgrims doing everything in their power to ensure that a sporting “circus” was avoided.

Plymouth CEO Andrew Parkinson has told the : “Some of it is a bit ridiculous, because you could have things like lifestyle programmes. In fairness, he didn't want to do any of that. He just wanted to concentrate on football, and actually so did we really. Otherwise, it becomes a bit of a circus.”
